Today’s post is all about rejuvenating and nourishing your skin and the cannabinoids that help get you there. By now you’ve probably noticed that CBD is everywhere, and I mean everywhere! One of the larger markets to include CBD is the skincare/cosmetics space. Lotions, serums, cleansers, you name it—they’re all getting the cannabinoid treatment. The cosmetics market is set to skyrocket¹ to $171.1 billion over the next four years with the addition of cannabinoids to skincare products so, what can they do to replenish and improve the appearance of our skin?

The skin is the largest organ of the body with a unique structure that provides the first line of defense against injury and infection. All of that defending takes its toll and our skin needs pampering and extra care to keep the natural barrier moisturized and protected as well to reduce the visible signs of aging and enhance the skin’s appearance to look supple and radiant. Just like the cells found inside your body, skin cells play a role in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), as they also have cannabinoid receptors. When researching the benefits cannabinoids may have on the skin, there are three cannabinoids that appear to dominate the results. Today we’re going to explore how Cannabidiol (CBD), Cannabigerol (CBG), and Cannabichromene (CBC) may add a new level of pampering to our everyday skincare routine.

CBD and Your Skin:

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been reported to have numerous potential benefits and may be essential to supporting inner balance and the overall health and wellness of many of our body’s organ systems.^† CBD has been demonstrated to help support our body internally^† and recent research suggests that it may play a part in overall skin appearance as well.² As the largest organ, the skin is a part of the endocannabinoid system as skin cells have been shown to have endocannabinoid receptors. Since our skin is the first line of defense for our bodies, it helps protect us from different environmental threats, like the sun, weather, and other daily factors. Reduction of moisture or an increase in puffiness can result in changes in the overall appearance of our skin. Using a topically applied CBD, like that which is found in skincare products, soothes and nourishes skin and research indicates that CBD is very promising for use by those who want to enhance the appearance of their skin.

CBD can play a significant role in the look of our skin. The everyday environment coupled with Aristotle’s philosophical theory³ that in nature no one is getting younger, means we could find ourselves searching for products that will help us achieve the look of youthful skin. Based on the current market and projections of the skincare industry, skincare products with CBD are a must have!  We have previously discussed in other blogs pertaining to the use of cannabinoids in hemp supplements the importance of and science behind the entourage effect⁴ and how CBD in a full spectrum hemp extract works in a more complete way than  products using a CBD isolate.^†  Researchers have found that CBD, in combination with other naturally-occurring cannabinoids like CBC and CBG, can be even more replenishing for our skin.⁵ Let’s take a look at the synergy that can occur when CBG and CBC are combined with CBD.

CBG and Your Skin:

Cannabigerol (CBG) has been found to demonstrate several skin-beautifying effects on its own and additional changes have been reported when combined with CBD.  Similar to its actions as a dietary supplement – where studies have demonstrated CBG supports increased levels of good bacteria in the gut^†– when applied to the skin, CBG also appears to have nourishing results. In a study demonstrating effects when CBG works synergistically with CBD, researchers noted the combined cannabinoids lead to a more revitalized appearance with less puffiness and redness, and promoted the look of youthful skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.⁶ Once applied on the skin, CBG appears to work in tandem with our body’s naturally produced compound squalene (the oily secretions produced by sebum glands in the skin) to comfort dry skin and keep skin appearing supple and hydrated.⁷

CBC and Your Skin:

The surprise of the cannabinoid/skincare combination as science emerges has to be Cannabichromene (CBC). Research has shown that this powerful minor cannabinoid, as a dietary supplement, creates balance in the ECS when paired with CBD and CBG, stimulating a synergistic entourage effect of wellness throughout the body.^†8  CBC is paramount for promoting the look of nourished, youthful, radiant skin and has demonstrated the ability to reduce the appearance of puffiness and redness when applied to the skin.  Even though CBC and CBD appear to have similar effects when discussing skin revitalization and nourishment, they do so in very different ways since each cannabinoid binds to different skin cell cannabinoid receptors in the ECS.⁹ It’s the synergy of these cannabinoids that make them so beneficial for skin rejuvenation.
