Ancient Remedies: Modern Benefits

In the world of food and supplement formulations, the more active ingredients you put together, the greater risk there is of them either diluting each other or carrying too many potential side effects on a compromised system. While true synergy is the key, most “stuffed to the gills” products often sound better than they are once they enter the body. The body does not approach things the same way as we typically think it does. More is not better. The body only uses only what it needs, but synergistic ingredients can boost this process. To pull off a true formulation as intended, we must rely on history and ancient botanical practices to guide us. So, today, let’s dive into the incredible attributes of five unique ingredients whose beautiful history together is hard to deny: Amla, Jujube, Schisandra, Holy Basil, and Haritaki. Each of these ingredients has a rich history in traditional medicine, particularly Ayurveda, and when combined, offer a truly holistic approach to health and well-being.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry, is revered in Ayurveda for its numerous health benefits. This small, green fruit is not known in the west as well as it is in the east. Nonetheless, it is packed with vitamin C, making it a very potent antioxidant and something many people need in their diets. Amla is said to support immune system function, enhance skin health, and promotes digestive health. It’s also known to balance all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), making it a versatile ingredient in Ayurvedic formulations. See our previous blog on Ayurveda for more information. Beyond its antioxidant properties, Amla also supports heart health and is believed to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. That is a true powerhouse ingredient. And it tastes great too!
Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba)
Jujube, often called the Chinese date for those feeling intimidated by its pronunciation, is a fruit celebrated in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its calming and restorative properties. And no, it is not the inspiration for the filling-tearing Jujubes candy. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, Jujube is known to help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and it also supports digestive health (synergy!). It is known for its ability to nourish the blood and enhance overall vitality too. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jujube is often used to support the spleen and stomach meridians, promoting better nutrient absorption and energy production.
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis)
Schisandra, a powerful adaptogen, has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Russian traditional medicine. This berry is renowned for its ability to enhance endurance, reduce stress, and promote mental clarity. Schisandra helps the body adapt to physical and mental stress by modulating the body’s stress response. It also supports liver function and detoxification processes, making it a key player in overall health maintenance. In a synergistic formulation, adaptogens are very important as their versatility can support all others.
Holy Basil (Tulsi)
Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is a sacred plant in Ayurveda, often referred to as the “Queen of Herbs.” Tulsi is celebrated for its adaptogenic properties too, helping the body cope with stress while supporting immune function and respiratory health, making it beneficial for protecting the body against various stressors. Tulsi is also known to promote mental balance and enhance cognitive function, contributing to overall well-being.
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)
Haritaki, known as the “King of Medicines” in Ayurveda (we have a queen so why not a king too), is a powerful herb used for its detoxifying and rejuvenating properties. It supports digestive health, promotes regular bowel movements, and helps eliminate toxins from the body. Haritaki is also known for its ability to support healthy lungs and respiratory function. It balances all three doshas, particularly Vata, and is often used in Ayurvedic formulations for its ability to enhance overall vitality and longevity.
Synergistic Properties
When these powerful ingredients are combined, their synergistic effects can provide a comprehensive approach to health. Their effects are “emergent” in that they can be thought to reach beyond the effects the ingredients provide individually. The antioxidant properties of Amla, combined with the calming effects of Jujube, can help reduce oxidative stress and promote relaxation. Schisandra’s adaptogenic qualities complement the stress-reducing properties of Holy Basil, enhancing mental clarity and resilience. Haritaki’s detoxifying effects support the body’s natural cleansing processes, ensuring that the benefits of the other herbs are maximized.
A Holistic Approach to Wellness
In Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems, the focus is on balancing the body’s energies and promoting holistic wellness. The combination of Amla, Jujube, Schisandra, Holy Basil, and Haritaki reflects this philosophy, offering a blend that supports physical, mental, and emotional health. These ingredients not only provide individual benefits but also work together to enhance overall vitality, making them a powerful addition to any wellness regimen. Whether through supplements, teas, or other herbal formulations, the benefits of Amla, Jujube, Schisandra, Holy Basil, and Haritaki are truly remarkable, grounded in centuries of traditional wisdom and supported by modern research.
